Osculum, osculi, n., second declension, the diminutive of os, oris, "mouth" - so a little mouth, and then by transfer what a little mouth does.

Latin grades its kisses and the distinction is real. Osculum is the dutiful, public, family kiss. Basium is affectionate, the one Catullus counts. Savium is the one you would not describe to your mother. The liturgical osculum pacis is squarely in the first category, and it is the sense that dominates this corpus. Curiously, the Romance words for kissing come from basium, not from this one: Spanish besar, French baiser.
