Par, paris is a third declension adjective of one termination: the same form par serves masculine, feminine and neuter in the nominative, and the genitive paris is what tells you the stem. It declines as an i-stem, so the ablative singular is pari, the neuter plural paria and the genitive plural parium.
The construction is the thing to learn. Par governs the DATIVE of whatever is matched: nemo illi par, "nobody equal to him". Where the two things being compared are both named, Latin can also use a genitive or the preposition cum.
As a neuter noun par, paris means a pair, and impersonally par est plus an infinitive means "it is fitting, it is only right". The compound impar is the opposite, uneven or unmatched. English took par, peer, pair, compare, disparate and parity from it.
