Pateo, patere, patui is second conjugation and intransitive, and it is defective: there is no supine, so no perfect participle and no perfect passive. Three uses. Literally open, of a door or a gate. Spatially spread out - fines late patent, "the territory extends far". And impersonally, patet, "it is obvious", which is the standard move in philosophical and legal argument, usually followed by an indirect question or an accusative and infinitive.
The trap is patior, "suffer", which looks close and is unrelated: patet is from pateo, patitur from patior. The transitive partner is patefacio, "throw open", and the English descendant is "patent", which started as litterae patentes, an open letter anyone could read.
