Poeta, poetae, m., first declension but masculine, which is the reason it earns a page of its own. The first declension is overwhelmingly feminine, and a small set of nouns naming male roles - poeta, nauta, agricola, scriba - keep the feminine endings while taking masculine agreement. So it is poeta bonus, never poeta bona. The endings tell you the declension; they do not tell you the gender.

It is a Greek import, poietes, "a maker", from poiein, "to make". Latin already had vates for a poet in the older prophetic sense, and the two never quite merged. English poet, poem, poetry and poetic all descend from it, along with Spanish poeta and French poète, both still masculine.
