is the neuter comparative of , "able", used only as an adverb. Its job is to mark a CHOICE between two options rather than a degree along a scale: A B, "A in preference to B". The superlative is , "above all, in preference to everything else".
That distinction against is the one worth holding. grades: more so, to a greater extent. selects: this one, not that one. So doctus is "more learned than brave", a comparison of degree, while servire is a choice between two courses. With , which already means "to prefer", is emphatic rather than necessary, and Latin uses it there anyway.
