is the neuter comparative of doing adverb duty, so it means "earlier, sooner, before now", always with a comparison lurking in it even when the second term is unstated. Its positive is pri- (no free-standing form) and its superlative is or , "first".
Its main use is as half of , "before", which is written as one word or split as ... with words in between: veniat. The mood follows a clean rule. Plain statement of a past fact takes the INDICATIVE; anticipation, purpose or something forestalled takes the SUBJUNCTIVE, which is why veniat above is subjunctive. Keep apart from the adjective and from , "first of many".
