As a preposition post takes the ACCUSATIVE: post , post me, post . It reads as "behind" in space and "after" in time, and Latin uses the same word for both, where English keeps them apart. It also works as a bare adverb meaning "afterwards, later", usually alongside an ablative of measure ( post ).

Welded to it becomes the conjunction postquam, which introduces a completed action and normally takes the PERFECT indicative: postquam , "after he came". The frequency count folds postquam in with post, since they are the same word doing two jobs.
