always takes the ACCUSATIVE: , , . One word covers both "between" two things and "among" many, so the number of the noun does the work English splits across two prepositions.
Two idioms are worth banking. With a plural subject, supplies what English calls "each other": amant, "they love one another". And with a noun naming an activity, slips from place into time, so cenam is "during dinner".
