Apud takes the accusative and covers ground that English needs four expressions for. With a person it means 'at the house of', exactly as French chez does: apud me cenavit, he dined at my place. With a people it means 'among', and in front of an official it means 'in the presence of'. With an author's name it means 'in the works of', which is why apud Ciceronem turns up in footnotes and citations to this day.
