Sub is one of the two-case prepositions, and the case carries the meaning. With the ablative it is place-where: sub arbore sedet, he is sitting under the tree. With the accusative it is motion to a position underneath: sub arborem currit, he runs under the tree. Sub plus the accusative also handles time, meaning 'just before' or 'towards', as in sub noctem, 'towards nightfall'.
