Praecipue is the adverb of praecipuus, "taken before the others", from prae plus capio - literally what you grab first. It marks one item out of a set as the main one and normally stands immediately in front of whatever it is picking out.
Latin is well supplied here and the shades are fine. Maxime is the broadest, potissimum the most emphatic choice-among-alternatives, praesertim the one that introduces a supporting reason, and praecipue the workhorse. Prose writers use all four in much the same slots, so do not over-invest in distinguishing them.
