praeterea

Praeterea is the preposition praeter plus the neuter accusative plural ea, "besides these things", fused into one indeclinable adverb. It adds an item to a list, and Latin writers reach for it far more freely than English reaches for "moreover"; often it is doing no more work than a comma before the next point.

The trap is temporal. Praeterea is not "afterwards", which is postea, and the two differ by one letter in the middle. Praeterea adds, postea sequences. In the same family, praeterquam is "except that", and the participle praeteritus, "gone by", is where the grammarians got the preterite tense.
