Propositum, propositi, n., second declension, the perfect participle of propono standing as a noun: the thing set out in front of you.
From there it fans out. A plan you have set yourself, a settled resolve you are expected not to abandon, and in rhetoric the theme you announced at the start - which is why a proposito means "off the point" rather than "away from the plan". Medieval and monastic writers narrow it again to a religious vocation, the propositum a monk has professed, and in that corpus it is closer to "the life he has undertaken" than to "his intention".
