Goodwill counts for more than words.
Voluntas, voluntatis, f., third declension, formed on volo, "to wish". It covers three things at once: the faculty of willing, a particular wish or intention, and the goodwill you bear towards someone. That last is behind the pax hominibus bonae voluntatis of the Christmas liturgy, and behind the legal bona fide sense of good intention.
Sua voluntate, "of his own accord", is the standing idiom and the ablative is doing adverbial work. In law a voluntas is a last will and testament, exactly as in English. The one thing to keep straight is voluptas, "pleasure", which differs by a single letter and is a very different quality to attribute to an abbot in a chronicle.
