Saxum, saxi, n., is second declension and entirely regular. The interesting part is the choice between it and its neighbours. Saxum is rock as mass: a boulder, a crag, a cliff face, the thing Sisyphus pushes. Lapis is a stone you could pick up and throw, and also a milestone. Rupes is a sheer rock, a precipice. Petra is a Greek loan that classical prose mostly avoids and the Vulgate adopts wholesale, which is why the pun in tu es Petrus works in Latin at all.

Roman topography is full of it - the Saxum Tarpeium, the cliff they threw traitors from, and Saxa Rubra on the Flaminian Way. Of a person, saxum is an insult: unfeeling, immovable, thick.
