statuo

Statuo, statuere, statui, statutum, third conjugation, the causative of sto: to make something stand.

It leads two lives. The concrete one is "set up, erect", and it likes an object it can plant in the ground - a statue, an altar, a camp. The abstract one is "decide, determine, lay down", where the construction tells you what kind of deciding it is: a plain infinitive for a personal resolution (statuit manere), ut with the subjunctive for a formal decree, and statuere de aliquo for passing judgement on a person. The compounds are everywhere in prose - constituo, instituo, restituo, destituo - and English drew statute, status, statue and constitution from the same well.
