Status, status is fourth declension masculine, the verbal noun of sto: literally the way a thing stands. It covers a physical stance, a condition or state of affairs, and a legal or social standing. The genitive singular is status, identical in spelling to the nominative, which is the usual fourth declension nuisance.
Two cautions. It is not the English "status" of prestige - status rei publicae is the condition of the state, not its reputation. And status is also the perfect participle of sisto, so the word can mean "having been set up", with only the syntax to tell you. From it come state, estate, statute and stature.
