Sedes, sedis, f., third declension, from sedeo. Genitive plural usually sedum, sometimes sedium. Beginners trip over the nominative singular, which ends in -es and looks plural; check the verb before you decide.
Three layers of sense sit on top of one another. The physical seat or throne comes first. Then the settled place where someone sits down for good, so "abode, dwelling, home", and in the plural often a whole territory. Then the church sense, the bishop's chair and by extension his jurisdiction: sedes apostolica, the Holy See, and sede vacante for the interval between popes. English "see" arrives from exactly that, through Old French sied.
