Tristis, triste is a third declension adjective of two terminations: tristis serves masculine and feminine, triste is the neuter, and the i-stem gives tristi in the ablative and tristia in the neuter plural.
The sense shifts with what it describes. Of a person it is sad. Of a thing it is grim, harsh or ill-omened, so a tristis nuntius is bad news rather than a mournful messenger, and tristia fata is a doom rather than a mood. The abstract noun is tristitia and the Vulgate's favourite verb is contristo, "make sad". French and Spanish carry triste on unchanged; English has only the borrowed tristesse.
