Unde is the place-from-which word, both as a question, unde venis?, and as a relative, rediit unde venerat. It sits in a neat three-way system: ubi asks where, quo asks where to, and unde asks where from, with ibi, eo and inde as the answers. In an indirect question it takes the subjunctive, as in nescio unde audiverit. It also carries an idiomatic sense of 'the means with which': non habeo unde solvam is 'I have nothing to pay with'.
