Inde is the answer to unde, from where, and it does the work a preposition plus a pronoun would otherwise do: from that place, so no ex or ab is needed alongside it. It slides easily from place to time, meaning thereafter or from then on, and further still to cause, meaning as a result of that. Once that is clear, deinde stops looking arbitrary, because it is simply de plus inde.
