vestis

Vestis, vestis, f., third declension i-stem: ablative singular veste, genitive plural vestium. It is collective as much as countable, so the singular can be one garment or clothing in general, and the plural vestes is simply clothes.

The family around it is worth knowing: vestio, "to clothe", vestimentum, "a garment", and investio, which gave English invest in both its senses, first clothing a man in the robes of an office and only much later putting money into something. Do not confuse it with vestigium, "footprint, trace", which shares five letters and no ancestry. Spanish vestido and French vêtement continue it, and English has vest, vestment and vestry.
