vix

Vix means "scarcely, barely, only just, with difficulty". It shades between two things English keeps apart: the effort sense, vix se tenuit, "he could only just hold himself back", and the quantity sense, vix decem, "barely ten", where it quietly undersells a number.

Its most useful pattern is temporal. Vix ... cum sets up a "no sooner ... than" sentence: the main clause takes the pluperfect and the cum clause the perfect, vix venerat cum clamor ortus est. Latin puts the clock the other way round from English here, so it repays reading slowly the first few times. Vixdum is the intensified form.

Because vix is a near-negative it behaves like one grammatically. It pairs with ullus and quisquam, the words Latin uses after negatives, and not with nullus or nemo: vix ullus, "scarcely any", exactly as English says "hardly any" and not "hardly none". Doubling the negation is not an option in Latin, since two negatives cancel.
