Mandarin · Chapter 10 · Lesson 19 · Phrase session

Eating and drinking

Enough to get fed, get watered and pay for it.

Why these go together

买单 is the one to have ready. It is literally buy-bill, it is two characters, and it is what everyone in a restaurant actually says rather than any of the longer forms a textbook offers.

  • 我饿了。

    I am hungry.

  • 我们去吃饭。

    Let us go and eat.

    Literally: we go eat rice

  • 我要一杯咖啡。

    I would like a coffee.

Literally: I want one cup coffee

  • 我要水。

    I would like water.

  • 买单。

    The bill, please.

    Literally: buy bill
