Summarise a headline

BBC News 中文 publishes in simplified characters every day. One headline and its first paragraph is today's whole task.

Open BBC News 中文 (the simplified-character edition) and pick one story whose headline you can half read. Read the headline and the first paragraph twice, look up no more than three words, then write two sentences in Mandarin in your notebook: what happened, and what is happening now. Use the Pinyin keyboard built into your computer or phone (Windows, macOS, iOS and Android all ship one), or write in pinyin.

Headlines are written to be quick, and the same few hundred words come round every day. Skip what you do not know and hold on to what you do.

An example you can adapt

今天的新闻说,一个城市发生了大火。很多人离开了家,政府正在帮助他们。

Jīntiān de xīnwén shuō, yí gè chéngshì fāshēng le dà huǒ. Hěn duō rén líkāi le jiā, zhèngfǔ zhèngzài bāngzhù tāmen.

Today's news says a city has had a big fire. Many people have left their homes, and the government is helping them.
