Book your first exchange call
Half an hour in Mandarin, half an hour in English, with someone who is as nervous as you are. Tandem makes the match.
Book your first exchange call
Half an hour in Mandarin, half an hour in English, with someone who is as nervous as you are. Tandem makes the match.
Find a Mandarin speaker who is learning English on Tandem, chat by text for a day or two, then suggest a call: a time, and how you will split it between the two languages. Write the suggestion in Mandarin with the Pinyin keyboard built into your phone (iOS and Android both ship one), or in pinyin. On the call, keep a notebook open and write down every word your partner has to explain.
Your partner is a learner too, so mistakes are expected on both sides. Ten minutes of real conversation teaches more than an hour of worrying about it.
An example you can adapt
我们明天晚上八点打电话,好吗?前半个小时说中文,后半个小时说英语。
Wǒmen míngtiān wǎnshang bā diǎn dǎ diànhuà, hǎo ma? Qián bàn gè xiǎoshí shuō Zhōngwén, hòu bàn gè xiǎoshí shuō Yīngyǔ.
Shall we call tomorrow evening at eight? The first half hour in Chinese, the second half hour in English.
