Ch 27 · Lesson 21

Complaining politely

Getting something put right without making a scene.

Why these go together

(máfan nǐ), literally I trouble you, is the polite way in to any request, and a complaint goes better framed as a request. A raised voice loses face all round, yours included.

  • 。

    It is too noisy upstairs.

  • 。

We did not order this dish.

Literally: this dish is not the one we ordered

  • ?

    Could I change rooms?

Literally: can or cannot change a room

  • 。

I hope you can sort this out.

  • 。

Could you have a look at it for me, please?

  • 。

I am not very happy with the service.
