进展 (jìn zhǎn) is progress on a specific piece of work: a project, an investigation, a negotiation. It is mostly a noun, taking 有 (yǒu) or 取得 (qǔ dé) in front of it, but it also works as a verb with a manner phrase, as in 进展顺利 (jìn zhǎn shùn lì).
Two neighbours are worth separating. 发展 (fā zhǎn) is development in the large sense, of an economy, an industry or a person's career. 进步 (jìn bù) is improvement in a skill, which is what you say about a learner's Chinese. 进展 (jìn zhǎn) sits between them, tied to a task that is under way.
The trap for English speakers is treating it as a countable noun. You can say 有进展 (yǒu jìn zhǎn) or 有很大的进展 (yǒu hěn dà de jìn zhǎn), but not a number of progresses. It behaves like the uncountable English word, which at least makes the mapping easy.
