图书馆(tú shū guǎn) - library in Mandarin

图书馆 (túshūguǎn) is the library. 图书 (túshū) means "books" (literally "pictures and writings") and 馆 (guǎn) is a building for a public purpose, the same 馆 found in 博物馆 (bówùguǎn), "museum", and 餐馆 (cānguǎn), "restaurant".

Do not confuse the 馆 (guǎn) here with 管 (guǎn), "to manage, a tube", a common near-homophone trap; the two characters look nothing alike but sound identical.

School and university libraries both use this word, and it is common enough to shorten in casual speech to just 图书馆 (túshūguǎn) even without saying which one: 我去图书馆 (wǒ qù túshūguǎn), "I'm going to the library". "One library" is 一个图书馆 (yí gè túshūguǎn) or 一座图书馆 (yí zuò túshūguǎn).
