fue or era?

You met both five chapters ago. This is the one that keeps going wrong.

The rule

era is the imperfect: what things WERE like - background, description, something ongoing or repeated. fue is the preterite: one completed event, finished. The same words change meaning with the tense: era difícil describes how it felt all the way through, fue difícil sums the whole thing up as one finished experience.
