The neuter lo: lo bueno, lo que, lo de
The genderless article that turns adjectives into abstract nouns (lo importante), measures degree (no sabes lo difícil que fue), builds the relative lo que / lo cual, and points at an affair with lo de.
The short version
Lo turns an adjective into an idea
Put lo in front of a masculine singular adjective and you get an abstract noun: lo bueno is the good thing, lo difícil is the hard part, lo importante is what matters. Lo never agrees, because it points at a concept rather than a thing, so la buena and los buenos are not options here.
