Spanish · Chapter 35 · Lesson 9 · Common mistake

hizo or dejó?

Force and permission take the same shape in English.

The rule

hacer plus an infinitive MAKES someone do it: me hizo esperar. dejar plus an infinitive LETS them: me dejó esperar. One is force and the other is permission, and English builds both the same way, which is exactly why they get swapped.
