False friends, part 1: the classic traps

Words that look English but arent: embarazada is pregnant (not embarrassed), actual is current, realizar is carry out, sensible is sensitive, exito is success, fabrica is factory, libreria is a bookshop.

The short version

The false friend that causes real embarrassment

Embarazada means pregnant. The English speaker who explains they feel awkward with estoy muy embarazada has just announced they are very pregnant. For embarrassed use avergonzado, or say me da vergüenza. It is the perfect false friend, because the mistake itself is mortifying.

Mi jefa está embarazada.

My boss is pregnant.

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
