Story

A Paula le duele todo. Le duele la cabeza, le duele la espalda y le duelen los dos brazos. Hoy va por primera vez al médico nuevo. El doctor Vargas tiene una oficina pequeña y tranquila. "Hola, Paula. Entra, por favor", dice. Es un hombre tranquilo y muy amable.

Everything hurts Paula. Her head hurts, her back hurts, and both her arms hurt. Today she is going to the new doctor for the first time. Doctor Vargas has a small, quiet office. "Hello, Paula. Come in, please," he says. He is a calm and very kind man.

Paula se sienta. El doctor la mira a los ojos. "Pues, ¿qué te duele?", pregunta. "Me duele todo el cuerpo", dice Paula. "Me duelen los pies, me duele el cuello, y por la noche no puedo dormir bien." El doctor escucha sin decir nada. Después hace más preguntas.

Paula sits down. The doctor looks her in the eyes. "So, what hurts?" he asks. "My whole body hurts," says Paula. "My feet hurt, my neck hurts, and at night I cannot sleep well." The doctor listens without saying anything. Then he asks more questions.

"¿Trabajas mucho?", pregunta el doctor. "Sí, casi todo el día, y los fines de semana también", dice Paula. "¿Y qué te gusta hacer cuando no trabajas?" Paula lo piensa un momento. "No sé. Ya no tengo tiempo para nada." El doctor pone la mano sobre la mesa.

"Do you work a lot?" the doctor asks. "Yes, almost all day, and at the weekends too," says Paula. "And what do you like to do when you are not working?" Paula thinks about it for a moment. "I don't know. I no longer have time for anything." The doctor puts his hand on the table.

"Paula, tú no tienes una cosa mala", dice el doctor. "El problema es otro. A ti te falta sueño. Te falta tiempo para ti. Por eso te duele todo." Paula lo mira. Le parece raro, pero también le parece cierto.

"Paula, you do not have anything bad wrong with you," says the doctor. "The problem is a different one. You are short of sleep. You are short of time for yourself. That is why everything hurts." Paula looks at him. It seems odd to her, but it also seems true.

"Necesitas dormir más", dice el doctor Vargas. "Y necesitas un poco de tiempo cada día solo para ti. Una hora. Un café tranquilo. Algo que te guste." Paula tiene que escuchar bien, porque sabe que el doctor tiene razón. Toma un poco de agua y dice que sí.

"You need to sleep more," says Doctor Vargas. "And you need a little time every day just for yourself. An hour. A quiet coffee. Something you enjoy." Paula has to listen carefully, because she knows the doctor is right. She drinks a little water and says yes.

Paula sale de la oficina más tranquila. Ya no le duele tanto la cabeza. No es porque el doctor le dio algo, sino porque ahora sabe qué hacer. "Vuelve en un mes", dice él. "Si duermes bien, vas a estar mejor." Paula le da las gracias. Por primera vez en mucho tiempo, le gusta cómo se siente.

Paula leaves the office calmer. Her head no longer hurts so much. It is not because the doctor gave her something, but because now she knows what to do. "Come back in a month," he says. "If you sleep well, you will be better." Paula thanks him. For the first time in a long while, she likes how she feels.
