Story

Pedro tenía una tienda pequeña en el centro de la ciudad. En la tienda vendía relojes viejos. Su reloj favorito era el de su padre. Ese reloj era su mayor orgullo. Cada mañana lo ponía sobre la mesa, cerca de la puerta, para que todos lo vieran.

Pedro had a small shop in the centre of the city. In the shop he sold old watches. His favourite watch was his father's. That watch was his greatest pride. Every morning he put it on the table, near the door, so that everyone could see it.

Un lunes por la mañana, el reloj no estaba. Pedro lo buscó por todas partes, pero no lo encontró. "¿Hay alguien que lo haya visto?", preguntó a sus amigos. Nadie sabía nada. No había nadie que pudiera ayudarlo.

One Monday morning, the watch was not there. Pedro looked for it everywhere, but he did not find it. "Is there anyone who has seen it?" he asked his friends. Nobody knew anything. There was nobody who could help him.

Pedro empezó a ponerse nervioso. "Busco a alguien que sepa dónde está mi reloj", dijo en voz alta. "No hay nada que me importe más que ese reloj." Su amiga Paula lo miró con calma. "Ten paciencia, Pedro. Vamos a buscarlo juntos, con orden."

Pedro started to get nervous. "I'm looking for someone who knows where my watch is," he said loudly. "There is nothing that matters to me more than that watch." His friend Paula looked at him calmly. "Be patient, Pedro. Let's look for it together, in an orderly way."

Pedro puso un aviso en la puerta de la tienda: "Busco un reloj viejo. Es un reloj sencillo, pero muy importante para mí." Mucha gente entró a mirar, pero nadie lo había visto. Pedro no creía que alguien lo hubiera robado, porque sus amigos nunca le mentían.

Pedro put a notice on the shop door: "I'm looking for an old watch. It is a simple watch, but very important to me." Many people came in to look, but nobody had seen it. Pedro did not believe that anyone had stolen it, because his friends never lied to him.

Paula tuvo una idea sencilla. "¿No estará en tu casa?", preguntó. "A veces buscamos algo lejos cuando permanece muy cerca." Pedro pensó un momento. Esa mañana había llevado el reloj a casa para limpiarlo. Quizás lo hubiera dejado allí.

Paula had a simple idea. "Might it not be at your house?" she asked. "Sometimes we look for something far away when it stays very close." Pedro thought for a moment. That morning he had taken the watch home to clean it. Perhaps he had left it there.

En casa, la pequeña hija de Pedro jugaba en el suelo. En sus manos tenía el reloj de su abuelo. Lo había cogido por curiosidad, solo para ver cómo servía, cómo sonaba dentro. "Papá, mira, es muy bonito", dijo la niña, feliz.

At home, Pedro's little daughter was playing on the floor. In her hands she held her grandfather's watch. She had picked it up out of curiosity, just to see how it worked, how it sounded inside. "Dad, look, it's very pretty," said the girl, happily.

Pedro sonrió y ya no estaba nervioso. Miró a su hija con calma y no dijo nada duro, porque no había hecho nada malo. Volvieron juntos a la tienda y él puso el reloj sobre la mesa otra vez, en su lado de siempre.

Pedro smiled and was no longer nervous. He looked at his daughter calmly and did not say anything harsh, because she had done nothing wrong. They went back to the shop together, and he put the watch on the table again, in its usual place.

Pedro aprendió algo sencillo ese día. No hay nadie que sepa cuidar mejor las cosas que una persona con calma y paciencia. Y muchas veces, lo que buscamos con tanto miedo permanece cerca, esperando a que lo veamos. Su mayor orgullo seguía siendo el reloj de su padre, pero ahora también era su hija.

Pedro learned something simple that day. There is nobody who knows how to look after things better than a calm and patient person. And often, what we search for so fearfully stays close, waiting for us to see it. His greatest pride was still his father's watch, but now it was also his daughter.
