Cuando llegué, ya había pasado

Story

Rafa siempre llegaba tarde. No lo hacía queriendo; simplemente el tiempo se le escapaba de las manos. Sus amigos ya lo sabían. "Cuando Rafa llega, la fiesta ya ha terminado", decían con una sonrisa.

Rafa was always late. He did not do it on purpose; time simply slipped through his fingers. His friends already knew it. "By the time Rafa arrives, the party is already over," they would say with a smile.

Un sábado, sus amigos organizaron un concierto pequeño en el parque. Avisaron a Rafa a las seis. "Ven a las siete", le dijeron. Pero Rafa perdió el tiempo con mil cosas y salió tarde de casa.

One Saturday, his friends organised a small concert in the park. They told Rafa at six. "Come at seven," they said. But Rafa wasted time on a thousand things and left home late.

Cuando llegó al parque, ya había pasado todo. La música había terminado. La gente se había ido. Solo quedaban unas sillas vacías y la sombra de los árboles sobre el suelo.

When he got to the park, it had all already happened. The music had finished. The people had left. Only a few empty chairs remained, and the shade of the trees over the grass.

Rafa buscó a sus amigos, pero no encontró a nadie. Se sentó en una silla, cansado. "Otra vez lo mismo", pensó. "Siempre llego cuando ya ha pasado la mejor parte."

Rafa looked for his friends, but he found nobody. He sat down on a chair, tired. "The same thing again," he thought. "I always arrive once the best part is already over."

Por casualidad, vio a María, que volvía a por su chaqueta. "¿Dónde están todos?", preguntó Rafa. "Ya se han ido a cenar", dijo María. "Te esperamos una hora, pero pensamos que no vendrías."

By chance, he saw María, who was coming back for her jacket. "Where is everyone?" Rafa asked. "They have already gone to have dinner," said María. "We waited an hour for you, but we thought you would not come."

Rafa no tenía ninguna excusa buena. Sabía que su actitud tenía que cambiar. Había perdido demasiadas cosas por llegar tarde: conciertos, cenas, momentos con la gente que quería.

Rafa had no good excuse. He knew his attitude had to change. He had missed too many things by arriving late: concerts, dinners, moments with the people he cared about.

"Lo siento", dijo Rafa. "Sé que siempre llego tarde. Pero esta vez quiero arreglarlo." María dijo con una sonrisa: "Todavía puedes venir a la cena. Aún no hemos pedido."

"I'm sorry," said Rafa. "I know I'm always late. But this time I want to fix it." María smiled. "You can still come to dinner. We haven't ordered yet."

Esa noche, por primera vez en mucho tiempo, Rafa llegó antes que nadie. Cuando sus amigos entraron en el restaurante, él ya se había sentado a una mesa para todos. "¿Rafa, tú, el primero?", dijeron, contentos. Y Rafa, feliz, entendió que nunca era demasiado tarde para cambiar.

That night, for the first time in a long while, Rafa arrived before anyone else. When his friends came into the restaurant, he had already sat down at a table for everyone. "Rafa, you, first?" they laughed. And Rafa, happy, understood that it is never too late to change.
