El café del barrio

Story

Carlos entra en el café a las ocho de la mañana, como cada día. La puerta hace lo mismo de siempre. La señora que está cerca de la puerta lo mira y le dice hola. Él hace lo mismo. Es el café de siempre, en el mismo lugar, en la misma calle, con la misma gente.

Carlos walks into the cafe at eight in the morning, like every day. The door does the same as always. The woman near the door looks at him and says hello. He does the same. It is the same cafe, in the same place, on the same street, with the same people.

Carlos va a su mesa de siempre, la que está cerca de la puerta. Quiere ver pasar a la gente de la calle. Hoy hay algo nuevo. La mesa tiene un mantel. Antes no había nada. Carlos no dice nada. Solo mira el mantel y piensa que es bonito.

Carlos goes to his usual table, the one near the door. He likes to watch the people in the street go by. Today there is something new. The table has a tablecloth. Before there was nothing. Carlos says nothing. He just looks at the cloth and thinks it is nice.

Pide lo mismo de siempre: un café y nada más. Pero la persona que viene a la mesa no es la persona de siempre. Es una mujer joven, con los ojos grandes y la cara amable. Le pregunta si quiere algo más. Carlos dice que no, gracias.

He orders the same as always: a coffee and nothing more. But the person who comes to the table is not the usual person. It is a young woman, with big eyes and a kind face. She asks him if he wants anything else. Carlos says no, thank you.

La mujer vuelve con el café. Carlos le da las gracias. Ella se queda un momento al lado de la mesa.

The woman comes back with the coffee. Carlos thanks her. She stays a moment beside the table.

"Es mi primer día aquí," dice ella. "Mi padre es el nuevo dueño del café. El otro señor ya no quiere trabajar. Es muy viejo."

"It's my first day here," she says. "My father is the new owner of the cafe. The other man does not want to work any more. He is very old."

Carlos no sabe qué decir. Después de un momento, dice: "Pues bienvenida al barrio. El café es bueno. La gente también."

Carlos does not know what to say. After a moment, he says: "Well, welcome to the neighbourhood. The coffee is good. The people too."

Ella le hace una pequeña sonrisa y se va a otra mesa. Carlos toma su café. Está caliente, como siempre. El sabor es igual. El lugar parece el mismo, pero también parece otro. Tal vez es el mantel. Tal vez es la cara nueva.

She gives him a small smile and goes to another table. Carlos drinks his coffee. It is hot, as always. The taste is the same. The place seems the same, but it also seems different. Maybe it is the tablecloth. Maybe it is the new face.

Termina el café, deja el dinero en la mesa y sale a la calle. Mañana va a volver. Mañana, la misma mesa va a estar otra vez allí. Y la mujer joven también.

He finishes the coffee, leaves the money on the table, and goes out into the street. Tomorrow he will come back. Tomorrow, the same table will be there again. And the young woman too.
