El mejor café de la calle

Story

Pedro tiene una idea muy clara sobre los cafés de su calle. Para él, no todos son iguales. Conoce cada sitio, porque va a tomar café cada mañana. "Yo puedo decir cuál es el mejor y cuál es el peor", dice a Laura y a Sofía. "Es la verdad. Tengo razón." Laura y Sofía quieren saber más, porque las dos son nuevas en la ciudad.

Pedro has a very clear idea about the cafes on his street. For him, they are not all the same. He knows each place, because he goes for coffee every morning. "I can tell you which is the best and which is the worst," he says to Laura and Sofía. "It's the truth. I'm right." Laura and Sofía want to know more, because they are both new in the city.

"El café pequeño, al final de la calle, es el mejor", dice Pedro. "El café es muy bueno y el precio es el más bajo de todos. El sitio es pequeño y tranquilo, con poca gente. Para mí, este es el lugar perfecto por la mañana." Laura piensa que un café bueno y a buen precio es una idea muy buena.

"The small cafe, at the end of the street, is the best," says Pedro. "The coffee is very good and the price is the lowest of all. The place is small and quiet, with few people. For me, this is the perfect spot in the morning." Laura thinks that good coffee at a good price is a very good idea.

"Después hay otro café, junto a la tienda nueva", dice Pedro. "Ese no es el mejor, pero tampoco es malo. Es el segundo. El café está bien, el precio no es muy alto, y siempre hay mucha gente. No es tranquilo, pero el sitio es bonito. Si el pequeño está lleno, voy a ese."

"Then there's another cafe, next to the new shop," says Pedro. "That one isn't the best, but it isn't bad either. It's the second best. The coffee is fine, the price isn't very high, and there are always lots of people. It isn't quiet, but the place is pretty. If the small one is full, I go to that one."

"Y el café grande y nuevo, el del centro?", pregunta Sofía. Pedro hace una cara mala. "Ese es el peor. Es muy grande y muy bonito, sí, pero el café es malo y el precio es el más alto de la calle. La gente va por el sitio, no por el café. Para mí, dar tanto dinero por un café tan malo no es una buena idea." Laura y Sofía piensan que Pedro es muy gracioso.

"And the big new cafe, the one in the centre?" asks Sofía. Pedro makes a sour face. "That one is the worst. It's very big and very pretty, yes, but the coffee is bad and the price is the highest on the street. People go for the place, not for the coffee. For me, giving so much money for such bad coffee is not a good idea." Laura and Sofía think Pedro is very funny.

"Hay uno más", dice Pedro. "Es el más dulce de todos. Tienen un café con mucha agua y mucho dulce. A mí no me gusta, pero a mucha gente sí. Cada persona tiene su café. Yo solo digo cuál es el mejor para mí." Sofía piensa que Pedro habla de los cafés como otra persona habla de su ciudad o de su gente.

"There's one more," says Pedro. "It's the sweetest of them all. They have a coffee with lots of water and lots of sweetness. I don't like it, but a lot of people do. Each person has their coffee. I'm only saying which is the best for me." Sofía thinks Pedro talks about the cafes the way another person talks about their city or their people.

"Vale, Pedro", dice Laura. "Vamos ahora al café pequeño. Si es el mejor, queremos probar el mejor primero." Pedro está muy feliz. Las tres van por la calle hasta el final. El sitio es pequeño y tranquilo, como dice Pedro. Toman un café, y para Laura y Sofía, en su primera mañana en la ciudad, ese café es el mejor del mundo.

"All right, Pedro," says Laura. "Let's go to the small cafe now. If it's the best, we want to try the best first." Pedro is very happy. The three of them walk down the street to the end. The place is small and quiet, just as Pedro says. They have a coffee, and for Laura and Sofía, on their first morning in the city, that coffee is the best in the world.
