Espero que vengáis

Story

Es por la tarde y María está en casa. Hoy quiere hacer una cena para la familia Pereira. Son una familia muy amable, con un hijo pequeño, y ella los conoce desde hace poco. María mira el reloj. Todavía es pronto. "Espero que vengan", piensa. "Ojalá no haga frío esta noche." Pone la mesa con cosas bonitas y deja un poco de pan al lado del agua.

It is the afternoon and María is at home. Today she wants to make dinner for the Pereira family. They are a very kind family, with a small son, and she has known them for a short while. María looks at the clock. It is still early. "I hope they come," she thinks. "I hope it is not cold tonight." She lays the table with pretty things and leaves a little bread beside the water.

María llama por teléfono a la señora Pereira. "Hola, soy María. Quiero que vengáis a cenar a mi casa esta noche. ¿Podéis?" La señora Pereira está feliz. "Claro que sí. ¿A qué hora?" María dice: "A las ocho y media. Espero que el niño coma bien, porque la comida no es muy grande, pero es buena." La señora Pereira dice: "No necesitas hacer mucho. Solo queremos verte."

María phones Mrs Pereira. "Hello, it's María. I want you to come to dinner at my house tonight. Can you?" Mrs Pereira is happy. "Of course. At what time?" María says: "At half past eight. I hope the boy eats well, because the meal is not very big, but it is good." Mrs Pereira answers: "You do not need to do much. We just want to see you."

A las ocho María mira otra vez el reloj. Ahora tiene un poco de miedo. "Prefiero que lleguen pronto", piensa. "Necesito que todo salga bien." Mira la mesa, mira la luz de la casa. Todo está tranquilo. Entra en la cocina, escucha la calle y espera. Pasan cinco minutos, después diez. "Ojalá no se hayan perdido", dice para ella.

At eight María looks at the clock again. Now she is a little afraid. "I would rather they arrive soon," she thinks. "I need everything to go well." She looks at the table, she looks at the light of the house. Everything is calm. She goes into the kitchen, listens to the street and waits. Five minutes go by, then ten. "I hope they have not got lost," she says to herself.

Por fin alguien llama a la puerta. María abre y ve a los Pereira. El señor Pereira trae pan y una botella de vino. La señora Pereira trae al niño de la mano. "Queremos que esta noche sea buena para todos", dice el hombre con una cara amable. María siente algo muy bueno dentro. "Pasad, por favor. Espero que tengáis hambre."

At last someone knocks at the door. María opens it and sees the Pereiras. Mr Pereira brings bread and a bottle of wine. Mrs Pereira holds the boy by the hand. "We want tonight to be good for everyone," says the man with a kind face. María feels something very good inside. "Come in, please. I hope you are hungry."

Comen juntos frente a la mesa. El niño come bien y habla mucho. Los Pereira cuentan cosas de la ciudad, de su trabajo, de la gente que conocen. María escucha y está feliz. "Ojalá esta no sea la última vez", dice la señora Pereira. "Queremos que vengas tú a nuestra casa el mes que viene." María dice que sí.

They eat together at the table. The boy eats well and talks a lot. The Pereiras tell things about the city, about their work, about the people they know. María listens and smiles. "I hope this is not the last time," says Mrs Pereira. "We want you to come to our house next month." María says yes.

Después de la cena, los Pereira van a casa. María se queda sola, pero no está triste. Mira la mesa, las cosas pequeñas, la luz. Piensa en el niño, en el vino, en las palabras buenas. "Todo ha salido bien", dice. Por una noche, una cena en casa con gente amable le parece la cosa más bonita del mundo.

After dinner, the Pereiras go home. María is left alone, but she is not sad. She looks at the table, the small things, the light. She thinks about the boy, about the wine, about the kind words. "Everything has gone well," she says. For one night, a dinner at home with kind people seems to her the loveliest thing in the world.
