La cena de los Pereira

Story

Es viernes por la noche. La familia Pereira está en la cocina. María, la madre, hace la cena. Pedro, su marido, lee algo en el teléfono. Lucas, su hijo, mira la mesa sin decir nada. Tiene quince años y no quiere hablar. Hace tres semanas, Pedro dijo que este año la familia iba a hacer un viaje. Ahora es el momento de decidir.

It is Friday evening. The Pereira family is in the kitchen. María, the mother, is making dinner. Pedro, her husband, is reading something on his phone. Lucas, their son, looks at the table without saying anything. He is fifteen and does not want to talk. Three weeks ago, Pedro said this year the family was going to take a trip. Now it is time to decide.

"Pues bien," dice María. "Tenemos una semana. ¿Adónde vamos?" Pedro deja el teléfono. Lucas no dice nada. María sirve la comida y se queda mirando a su marido. Quiere una respuesta. Hace mucho tiempo que no salen de la ciudad.

"Well then," says María. "We have a week. Where are we going?" Pedro puts down the phone. Lucas says nothing. María serves the food and stays looking at her husband. She wants an answer. It has been a long time since they have left the city.

"Yo tengo una idea muy buena," dice Pedro. "Vamos a Madrid. Hay mucho que ver. Hay museos, hay calles grandes, hay gente. Es una ciudad con vida. A Lucas le va a gustar. Hay chicos de su edad por todo el centro." Pedro habla rápido, como siempre que tiene un plan. María lo escucha pero no parece contenta.

"I have a very good idea," says Pedro. "Let's go to Madrid. There is a lot to see. There are museums, big streets, people. It is a city with life. Lucas will like it. There are kids his age all over the centre." Pedro talks fast, as he always does when he has a plan. María listens but does not look pleased.

"No, Pedro. Otra ciudad no. Tú vives en la ciudad. Yo vivo en la ciudad. Lucas va a la escuela en la ciudad. Yo quiero un pueblo. Algo pequeño, tranquilo. Quiero dormir bien por la noche, sin coches, sin tanta gente en la calle. Hay un pueblo cerca de Granada. Mi hermano vivió allí dos años. Es un sitio bonito."

"No, Pedro. Not another city. You live in the city. I live in the city. Lucas goes to school in the city. I want a village. Something small and quiet. I want to sleep well at night, with no cars, no crowds in the street. There is a village near Granada. My brother lived there for two years. It is a lovely spot."

Pedro hace los ojos grandes. "¿Un pueblo? ¿Para tres? ¿Qué vamos a hacer allí toda la semana? Lucas, dile algo a tu madre. Dile que un pueblo es la peor idea del mundo." Lucas mira a su padre. Después mira a su madre. No quiere decir nada, pero los dos esperan.

Pedro opens his eyes wide. "A village? For three of us? What are we going to do there all week? Lucas, say something to your mother. Tell her a village is the worst idea in the world." Lucas looks at his father. Then he looks at his mother. He does not want to say anything, but they are both waiting.

"Yo no quiero ir a ningún lugar," dice Lucas. Habla muy poco, pero ahora habla. "Quiero quedarme aquí. Mis amigos están aquí. Tengo cosas que hacer. No me importa Madrid. No me importa el pueblo del tío. Quiero estar en casa."

"I don't want to go anywhere," says Lucas. He says little, but now he speaks. "I want to stay here. My friends are here. I have things to do. I don't care about Madrid. I don't care about the uncle's village. I want to be at home."

Hay un momento de nada. Pedro mira a María. María mira a Pedro. Los dos saben que Lucas tiene razón en algo: el viaje es de ellos, no de él. Pero también saben que no van a quedarse en casa. Esta es la primera semana libre del año.

There is a moment of silence. Pedro looks at María. María looks at Pedro. They both know Lucas is right about something: the trip is theirs, not his. But they also know they are not going to stay home. This is the first free week of the year.

"Bueno, a ver," dice María. Habla más bajo ahora. "El pueblo de mi hermano tiene un café. Tiene gente joven. Lucas, tú puedes salir por la tarde con los chicos de allí. Pedro, hay un coche. Podemos ir a la ciudad de al lado por el día, si tú quieres. Es lo mejor de los dos mundos. ¿No es así?"

"Right, look," says María. She speaks more softly now. "My brother's village has a café. It has young people. Lucas, you can go out in the afternoon with the kids there. Pedro, there is a car. We can drive to the city next door for the day, if you want. It is the best of both worlds. Isn't it?"

Pedro piensa un poco. Toma un poco de vino. No quiere decir que sí muy pronto, pero la idea no es mala. La ciudad cerca y el pueblo tranquilo. "Vale. Una semana, no más. Y un día en la ciudad." Lucas dice que sí con la cabeza. No es la casa, pero tampoco es Madrid. Es algo nuevo.

Pedro thinks a little. He takes a sip of wine. He does not want to say yes too soon, but the idea is not a bad one. The city close by and the quiet village. "Fine. One week, no more. And a day in the city." Lucas nods. It is not home, but it is not Madrid either. It is something new.

María sirve más comida. La cena está buena esta noche. La familia Pereira no siempre está de acuerdo, pero por ahora, todo está bien.

María serves more food. Dinner is good tonight. The Pereira family does not always agree, but for now, all is well.
