En el pueblo había una competencia de cocina cada primavera. Todos querían ganar. Para muchos, lo importante era el título de ganador y ser popular. Laura llevaba semanas pensando solo en eso.

In the village there was a cooking competition every spring. Everyone wanted to win. For many, the important thing was the winner's title and being popular. Laura had spent weeks thinking only about that.

Laura hacía platos muy buenos, pero esta vez estaba nerviosa. "Lo que quiero es ganar", le dijo a su amiga Sofía. "Lo mejor de ganar es que todos te conocen." Sofía la miró con calma.

Laura cooked very well, but this time she was nervous. "What I want is to win," she told her friend Sofía. "The best thing about winning is that everyone knows you." Sofía looked at her calmly.

El día de la competencia, había una fila larga de gente. Todos esperaban con sus platos. Era emocionante. Laura miró a las otras personas y sintió miedo. Lo difícil no eran los platos; lo difícil era estar tranquila.

On the day of the competition, there was a long line of people. Everyone was waiting with their dishes. It was exciting. Laura looked at the other cooks and felt afraid. The hard part was not the cooking; the hard part was staying calm.

Cuando llegó su turno, a Laura se le olvidó un paso. Su plato no salió como quería. No ganó. El ganador fue otro, un hombre mayor que hacía sus platos con una sonrisa tranquila. Laura se sintió triste.

When her turn came, Laura forgot a step. Her dish did not turn out as she wanted. She did not win. The winner was someone else, an older man who cooked with a calm smile. Laura felt sad.

Sofía se acercó a ella. "¿Sabes lo que pienso?", dijo. "Lo importante no es el título. Lo importante es que lo hiciste con el corazón." Laura no dijo nada, pero la escuchó.

Sofía came up to her. "Do you know what I think?" she said. "The important thing is not the title. The important thing is that you did it with your heart." Laura said nothing, but she listened to her.

Esa tarde, las dos amigas se sentaron a comer juntas lo que Laura había hecho. Estaba muy rico. "Mira", dijo Sofía, "esto es lo mejor: comer contigo, sin fila, sin gente mirando." Laura sonrió por primera vez en todo el día.

That afternoon, the two friends sat down to eat together what Laura had cooked. It was delicious. "Look," said Sofía, "this is the best thing: eating with you, no queue, no people watching." Laura smiled for the first time all day.

Laura entendió algo esa primavera. Lo de ganar y ser popular no importaba tanto. Lo que de verdad importa son las personas que están contigo cuando pierdes, no solo cuando ganas.

Laura understood something that spring. The whole winning-and-being-popular thing did not matter so much. What really matters is the people who are with you when you lose, not only when you win.

Al año siguiente, Laura volvió a la competencia. Esta vez hizo su plato sin miedo, solo por el gusto de hacer buena comida. No ganó el título, pero ganó algo mejor: hizo la comida con Sofía a su lado, y las dos celebraron juntas, felices.

The next year, Laura went back to the competition. This time she cooked without fear, just for the pleasure of cooking. She did not win the title, but she won something better: she cooked with Sofía at her side, and the two of them celebrated together, happy.
