Ch 7 · Lesson 10

finas or finiĝas?

needs someone finishing something. When the thing simply ends, add -iĝ-.

The rule

is transitive: a person finishes something, . When the thing itself comes to an end, with nobody doing it, Esperanto adds -iĝ-: . English uses 'finish' and ' both ways, which is why is such a common mistake. The same goes the other way: an intransitive root takes -ig- to act on something.
