adiaŭo .

The last farewell was the hardest.

is the heavy goodbye, the one that assumes you may not meet again, and it carries the weight accordingly. For ordinary partings Esperantists say o or simply , which is the everyday see you and by far the commoner word at a club or a congress. Use at a station platform in a novel, not when leaving the room for five minutes. Being Esperanto, the interjection takes endings freely: adiaŭi is to bid farewell to someone, and adiaŭo is the farewell itself. The final ŭ is a semivowel and forms a diphthong with the a before it, so the stress lands on the i: a-DI-aŭ.
