is transitive: you greet a person straight off, with no preposition in between. The everyday hello, !, is the accusative of for exactly the reason is - it is the surviving object of an unspoken "I send you". Say without the -n and it sounds like you are naming the concept rather than offering one. To send greetings through somebody, use : . handles the other end of the conversation.
