From Latin activus, from agere ('to do, to drive'). The same Latin verb gave Esperanto its own root agi, but aktiva was borrowed separately and whole.

Watch the seam. Esperanto has the verb agi, 'to act', from exactly the same Latin root, but is not ag- plus a suffix. Esperanto does have an -iv- suffix, unofficial and technical, the one in kreiva and produktiva (see the unofficial affixes), and is not built with it: aktiv- is one Latin root. The two words are cousins in Latin and strangers in Esperanto. If you want a built adjective from , the language gives you a, inclined to act.
