Translation
to allude to, to hint at
Word origin
From Latin alludere, to play with or jest at, from ad- (towards) and ludere (to play). The playful sense survives in English ludicrous and in the Esperanto root ludi, to play.

Examples

She did not say the name, but everyone understood.
?
What are you hinting at?
is saying a thing without naming it. It takes for the target ( ) and works too, so is the natural question. Set it against mencii, which names the thing outright: you allude when you would rather not be quoted. The noun aludo is a hint, and aluda describes a remark that carries one.
