Translation
duck
Word origin
From Latin anas, genitive anatis, the ordinary Roman word for a duck. Its relatives survive in Italian anatra and Spanish anade, though English replaced its own descendant of the same ancient root with duck, from a verb meaning to dive.

Examples

.
My grandfather kept ducks and hens.
.
The boy gave bread to the duck.
names the species and leaves the sex open, which is the sensible default. The animal affixes then do the sorting: -- gives , a duckling, -in- gives o, a female duck, and - gives viranaso for the drake. The same three pieces work on every animal root you meet, so learning them once buys you the whole farmyard. A duck's cry in Esperanto is gak gak, not quack.
