antaŭhieraŭ

Read it and you have it: antaŭ before, plus hieraŭ yesterday. Before yesterday. English needs four words for this and German has a single one, vorgestern, built exactly the same way.

It comes as one of a symmetric pair. Postmorgaŭ, at rank 2377 and landing in this same chapter, is post plus morgaŭ: after tomorrow. Line the family up and the shape of it is obvious at a glance:

• antaŭhieraŭ - the day before yesterday
• hieraŭ - yesterday
• hodiaŭ - today
• morgaŭ - tomorrow
• postmorgaŭ - the day after tomorrow

All five end in -aŭ, which is not a grammatical ending but part of a small closed set of primary adverbs Zamenhof fixed in place: almenaŭ, ankoraŭ, baldaŭ, hodiaŭ, morgaŭ, preskaŭ. Remember that aŭ is one syllable, a diphthong, so antaŭhieraŭ has four beats and not six.

One grammatical note. These words are already adverbs, so they take no accusative of time: you write antaŭhieraŭ mi vidis lin, never antaŭhieraŭn. That accusative is reserved for nouns doing adverbial duty, which is why mardo becomes mardon for "on Tuesday" but this word never changes shape at all.
