Translation
granny, grandma
Word origin
Built inside Esperanto from avo ('grandfather'), from Latin avus, by way of avino ('grandmother') and the affectionate suffix -nj- for female relatives. The suffix attaches to a shortened stem, which is why the word is avinjo and not avininjo.
- Origin
- Esperanto
- Root
- av- + -nj-
Examples
.
My granny bakes the best bread.
.
Granny told us a long story.
.
The children ran to their granny.
is the warm, family-table form of o, the way granny is to grandmother. The suffix -- does the same job for from and onjo from ; its male counterpart -- gives and o. It is one of the few Esperanto suffixes that cuts the root down instead of simply adding to it.
