English has one word "old" and Esperanto splits it in two, which is the distinction to learn here. is old in years and applies to living things; is old as opposed to new and belongs to objects. A is a house drawing its pension. -- gives for an old person, i is to grow old, and o is a care home. Note that is not rude in Esperanto the way "old" can be in English; it is simply the plain fact.
